Q: The new menu is quite pricey. I get the whole wellness thing, but this seems a bit expensive!

A: Our focus is on offering only the best-quality, freshest, most natural ingredients. We are absorbing the majority of the extra food cost in our quest to bring you the very best. Unfortunately, in some instances it also means that certain items may cost a little more.

Q: Why are the smoothies more expensive now?

A: Previously we used pre-made commercial juices in our smoothies. Now we only use more nutritious, freshly squeezed fruit and veg juices in our smoothies.

Q: Why is the food more expensive?

A: We now use free range chicken and better quality cheeses, vegetables and dressing.

Q: Are all your stores Halaal?

A: No, some of the ‘new concept’ stores serve bacon – so they are not Halaal. The majority of our existing stores are still Halaal (see www.kauai.co.za/menus)

Q: Do you have a catering menu?

A: We have discontinued the previous canape menu but we do have a catering offering of wrap platters and smoothies (www.kauai.co.za/menu/catering-menu)

Q: Why is there no longer wheatgrass on the menu?

A:  Unfortunately we couldn’t find a reliable, year-round wheatgrass source. Instead we have replaced it with super-healthy kale in our smoothies, raw juices and salads.

Q: Why don’t you offer the 650ml smoothie size any longer?

A: We want to ensure responsible portion sizes. With our high-quality, nutrient-dense ingredients, you’ll be fuller on fewer Calories or Kilojoules while still getting in all those essential vitamins and minerals.

Q: Why does my favourite smoothie taste different?

A: We’ve changed many of our ingredients - they’re now better quality and are additive free with the right balance of nutrients.

Q: Why does the Peanut Bomb tastes different? Why did you change the whey protein powder?

A: We found a better quality whey protein which is sourced from grass-fed cows and free of additives. We aim to offer only the highest quality, most natural products and this new whey is one of the best in terms of ingredients and nutritional value.

We also changed the chocolate powder (made with sugar) to cacao which is one of the most antioxidant rich foods in the world!

Q: Do you have a kiddies’ menu or children’s offering?

A: Yes we do have kids menu and it can be viewed at the following link http://www.kauai.co.za/sites/all/themes/kauai/pdf/Kauai_2016_Kids_Digita...

Q: Why don’t you serve sandwiches anymore?

A: We’re focussing on bringing you a wider selection of healthy and delicious wraps, salads and bowls. Try them and let us know what you think. We reduced our menu to focus on doing less items but better!

Q: Why has the colour scheme changed to black-and-white?

A: The contemporary black-and-white design provides the perfect backdrop for the natural bright colours of our fresh food.  Our food is our colour and we want the ingredients to be the heroes - highlighting the goodness of what goes into all our products

Q: Why the complete overhaul of the brand? KAUAI was all about its warm, inviting vibrant colours.

A: Our food is now our colour - we want our food to do that job of visual appeal in all our stores. Our food is healthy, bright and nutrient-dense and we want to showcase the quality of all the ingredients that go into our products.

Q: Have your portion sizes increased with the new menu offering?

A: Portion sizes have increased - including the portion size of the chicken (now free range) and other ingredients.

Q: Your new menu is limited. There are not enough smoothies/wraps/salads.

A: As of December, we have just expanded our wrap, salad and bowl offering and we have an extensive smoothie and raw juice range.  The aim is to have the “customise it” option at all our stores in the future, which will increase the menu offering further.

Q: Your new menu does not have enough vegetarian/vegan options. What do you expect us to eat?

A: There is a big variety of fresh vegetables, with butternut, beetroot, carrot and broccoli on offer as well as vegan-friendly protein options, including lentils.

Our Signature menu items, which include a delicious, healthy selection of wraps, salads and bowls are also available without the chicken, less R22.00.  As everything is made fresh to order, you can also ask to leave out any ingredient that is not suitable. Our new bowls contain a mix of warm brown rice and quinoa, which is gluten free and an excellent, source of protein.

On the breakfast menu, we do have the power oats, which can be served without the milk (or made with coconut milk)

Q: Your new menu no longer includes some of my favourites. What do I do?

A: Sorry to hear this is the case. Our aim is to bring on products that are even better than before. Please let us know which was your favourite wrap/smoothie/salad and we will happily give you an alternative option that you can try, which we’re sure you’ll love!

For ease we have selected some of the previous top selling menu items and have suggested alternatives. Please see the list below.

Q: Did you do a customer service survey before doing the menu overhaul?

A: A lot of the changes that have occurred are due to feedback we received from customers over the years. One of the major changes was introducing free range chicken, which has been a request from customers as well as a goal for us. Therefore, customers did play a major role in the changes you see now. We are committed to bringing our customers the healthiest, most nutritional products available, hence we are constantly looking at ways of offering a better quality products and service.

Q: Are there “full meal” items on your new menu or do you just serve light wraps and salads?

A: You will find a variety of hearty, healthy bowls on our menu as well as a selection of nutritionally rich and filling wraps and salads. These meals are perfect for lunch and dinner.

In addition to this we have a selection of breakfasts - both fresh breakfasts and full, cooked breakfasts.

We also have a wide selection of power packed smoothies that could be a meal on their own!

Lastly we have a wide range of freshly squeezed raw juices.

Our menu is exciting and diverse, and is sure to satisfy every palette!

The inspiration behind our menu was to make healthy eating -our passion- accessible. We’re inspired by nature and we’re committed to bringing you the very best. We don’t want to compromise on this. We source fresh, natural produce – REAL food that is free from all the nasty stuff. Where possible our food contains no colourants, flavourants, preservatives, hormones or GMOs. It’s our preference to source local with a focus on Fair Trade, ethically sourced produce.

Our “customise it” section in our concept stores (Kloof Street, Cape Town and Rosebank and Dainfern, Gauteng) also allows you to build your own wrap/salad or bowl with as many ingredients as you like - with the aim of appealing to all customer needs and dietary preferences.

Q: What was the general idea behind restructuring the menu inside Virgin Active and removing protein shakes like the Bulk Up?

A: The Bulk Up was removed as it was not a good seller nationwide. We still have the Peanut Butter Bomb and the Low Fat Protein Shake and have introduced Nature’s Protein (with pea protein) to our Superfood Smoothie offering.  In addition, you can add natural whey protein, sourced from grass-fed cows, to any smoothie on the menu.

Q: Why did you choose to move to “see-through” smoothie cups?

A: Our smoothies are vibrant and brightly coloured and we want these beautiful, fresh, natural colours to be seen.

Q: Where can I find the nutritional information about your menu items?

A: It’s available on our website www.kauai.co.za/ menu

Q: Is your Acai powder or purée?

A: Purée. It a berry from the Amazon and super high in antioxidants!

Q: When you say your food is made naturally, what does that mean?

A: We source fresh, natural produce - REAL food that is free from all the nasty stuff. High quality proteins and, where possible our food contains no colourants, flavourants, preservatives, hormones or GMOs. It’s our preference to source local with a focus on Fair Trade, ethically sourced produce.

Q: Some of your staff don’t seem as clued up as they should be on the new menu. Why is this?

A: Apologies if you have experienced poor customer service- we aim to provide you only the very best in-store experience.  Our staff are trained to understand the product and how to prepare it. If you have not been satisfied with your experience in one of our stores, please provide us with your contact details so we can follow up.
