Taste the Island

On the beautiful, garden island of Kauai, three friends sat under a papaya tree watching the surf. As they feasted on the fresh fruits that grew so abundantly around them, a dream was born. One day they would share this tastier, healthier way of life with the world.

KAUAI@School

KAUAI@School stores were opened at Reddam House Constantia and Green Point in 2007 as part of KAUAI’s campaign to expel junk food from South African schools.

This initiative educates children, parents and teachers about the benefits of healthy eating. The KAUAI menu has been adapted for schools to include a variety of salads, soups, wraps, breakfast snacks, hot meals and smoothies all packed with fresh fruit and other vital nutrients but at reduced sizes to cater to the appetites of children, and making the products more affordable to learners.

The schools’ project is KAUAI’s response to the Department of Health’s National Food Consumption Survey 2005 which concluded that 1 in 13 children in South Africa, aged between 1 and 9 are overweight. Since the initiative started, the benefits for kids have been clear: they are calmer, concentrate better and behave better in class. We plan on extending KAUAI@School to other schools in the Western Cape and Gauteng.
